Analyst firm IHS Markit is moving to Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud infrastructure provider, with analytics and machine learning noted as key indicators.

The company has run various products on AWS over the years, as well as being an advanced partner in the AWS Partner Network (APN), and is now looking to migrate ‘hundreds’ of additional applications in a three-year deal.

Among the services the company will utilise are machine learning – so often cited by customers as a differentiator – analytics, database, containers, serverless, storage, and security. IHS is also using VMware Cloud on AWS, providing a path for the company to use its VMware products to manage on-premise data centre environments and AWS infrastructure.

“Providing a comprehensive cloud-based storage and processing platform across our vast range of data is an important next step in our digital transformation journey,” said Yaacov Mutnikas, IHS Markit chief technology officer and chief data scientist. “Through the collaboration with AWS, we will be able to analyse global data faster, giving companies an integrated view into the global economy and sectors, and provide the next generation of innovative, customer-focused solutions.”

IHS incorporates the cloud industry into its analysis. Writing in December, Andrew Eisen, SVP and head of solutions for financial services, explored what cloud 2.0 looked like for the finance ecosystem. The buy-side industry is ‘recognising that deployed, in-house solutions are unsustainable’ and is ‘increasingly migrating many workflows to a cloud-based managed service model capable of managing alternative data sets and will harness the growing potential of AI.’

At the start of 2019, the company’s cloud IT infrastructure service provider ranking saw AWS, alongside Alibaba, Google, IBM and Microsoft, recognised as leaders.
