Alibaba’s cloud revenues hit $825 million this quarter – up 90% year over year

Alibaba has hailed a 90% year-on-year increase in its cloudy operations – posting quarterly revenues of $825 million (£636m).

Total revenue for the company was at $12.4 billion (£9.57bn), meaning cloud contributed to 6.6% of the overall pot. Overall revenues rose 54% year over year, representing the first time the company’s growth did not break 55% in seven quarters.

Alibaba Cloud launches London data centres with promise for further expansion

Alibaba Cloud has opened the doors on its UK data centres, adding to its global footprint and promising 24/7 support as well as real-time monitoring.

The move confirms the Chinese provider’s UK move, with the company now operating 52 availability zones in 19 regions worldwide. The others outside Asia Pacific are two regions in the US, and one region each in Frankfurt and Dubai, while outside China Alibaba has representation in Singapore....

Intel partners with Alibaba for edge computing platform

Intel has noted a $200 billion addressable opportunity for the 'data-centric' economy combining cloud, AI and edge - and the latter has come into force following a new partnership with Alibaba.

The collaboration, revealed at Alibaba's Computing Conference in Hangzhou, will see the two companies launch a joint edge computing platform.

Google and Alibaba focus on Southeast Asia in latest infrastructure expansion

The largest players in cloud computing are looking to Asia for further expansion – Google has announced it is building a new data centre in Singapore, while Alibaba Cloud has announced a second infrastructure zone in Malaysia.

Revenues at Alibaba have soared to $9.8 billion US (£7.2bn) for the company’s most recent quarter – with cloud computing revenues nudging $700 million.

Alibaba CEO says cloud business “continues to defy gravity” as revenue increases 99% year on year

Alibaba Group has recorded cloud revenues of RMB 2,975 million ($342.1m) for its most recent quarter, up 99% year on year, with CEO Daniel Zhang telling analysts its cloud business “continues to defy gravity.”

Gartner puts Alibaba in third place for public cloud IaaS behind AWS and Microsoft

Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues to hold all the aces in public cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) ahead of Microsoft – but Alibaba is ahead of Google to take third place in the market.

That is according to the analysts at Gartner, who argue the global IaaS public cloud market grew 31% in 2016 to total $22.1 billion (£16.5bn). AWS comprises 44% of that market share, at $9.78bn, with Microsoft in second on $1.58bn, Alibaba third on $675m, Google on $500m and Rackspace at $484m.

Alibaba passes one million paying cloud customers as CEO calls it ‘merely a starting point’

Alibaba has broken the one million mark for paying customers of its cloud computing business with revenues increasing 96% year over year, according to the company’s latest financial statement.

Revenues from cloud computing totalled RMB 2,431 million (£278m) in the quarter ending June 30, while the total number of customers was 1,011,000, up 15.7% from 874,000 in the previous quarter.
