How to get the right kind of control over your cloud: A guide

Trust in the cloud hasn’t always been universal. There was a time when security and risk management leaders feared entrusting critical data and infrastructure to a third-party cloud provider. This was understandable, arising from the history of network management, where IT teams were intimately familiar with managing the resources that made up their IT infrastructures, from the buildings they were housed in, to the electricity and cooling supply, through to the server, all the way down to the storage...

Digital dexterity: Exploring the new ways of work

As more progressive business leaders choose to support mobile, team-oriented and non-routine ways of working, an increasing number of them are looking for assistance in adopting digital workplace technology. But why are they searching for actionable information and qualified guidance?

According to the findings from the latest Gartner survey, only 7 to 18 percent of organizations possess the 'digital dexterity' to adopt New Ways of Work (NWOW) solutions -- such as virtual collaboration and a mobile...

Digital skills are evolving – without IT organisation engagement

While there's less commentary about the challenges of "Shadow IT" projects within the enterprise market, the underlying issues that created this phenomena are still very apparent in the workplace. Bypassing the legacy IT organization is a common practice. It's now somewhat expected.

As many IT workers develop greater technology skills and apply them to advance their careers, savvy digital workers in non-IT departments believe their CIO is out of touch with their technology needs. Less than...

Why building a cloud-native desktop service is a different game to VDI

Since virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and remote desktop session host (RDSH) technology has been available, vendors have offered on-premises solutions. Because these companies have made a name for themselves, most people familiar with the VDI space assume that the vendors who’ve been in the game for a long-time must lead sales in desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) solutions as well.

That’s a reasonable assumption, but it happens to be wrong – and the reason says something important about what...

Why a consumer approach to security – with cloud in mind – may help struggling enterprises

Are Amazon and Facebook the standard bearers when it comes to security? According to the latest identity and access management (IAM) study from Gemalto, more than half of respondents say their organisation’s work authentication methods are worse than those offered by the two tech giants.

The study, which polled more than 1,000 IT decision makers globally, found that the continued rise in cloud applications, as well as the similarly shopworn story around device proliferation, means enterprises are...

Why every cloud has a silver lining for today’s HR teams

HR has its head in the clouds. Of course, this conjures images of wistful thinking, while not focusing on the job in hand. However, in this instance, nothing could be further from the truth. HR is getting “smarter”, driven by cloud technology and innovations, enabling things to happen quicker, while adapting to new ways of working.

It is offering businesses the opportunity to - flexibly and cost-effectively - make use of the latest and most appropriate applications that can automate processes,...

Why IT needs to be an enabler for business to succeed

Delivering an IT service to a business is difficult. It needs to support and enable the success of the business. In my experience, every IT department wants to provide the best service it possibly can. Let’s face it, we all do – if the business is a success everyone wins.

There are a huge number of moving parts to the IT infrastructure of a company, with a great many complex interactions. These typically happen between teams that manage specific sections of this infrastructure. Unfortunately,...
