China biggest spender on public cloud in Asia Pacific, says IDC

Spending on public cloud services in the Asia Pacific region – excluding Japan – will hit $15 billion in 2018, representing an increase of 35% over the year before, according to IDC.

The findings show that while annual spending growth in the APeJ region will slow between the 2016 and 2021 forecast period, 2021 will see a total of $32.27bn. Spending on public cloud services this year will be driven by banking, with a spend of $1.85bn, ahead of professional services ($1.75bn) and discrete...

Public cloud: The app compatibility problem and how to overcome it

By now, the benefits of public cloud are well known. Better performance, lower costs, agility and greater flexibility are all key motivators to enable digital transformation. With these benefits in mind, it’s understandable why an organisation might choose to consolidate its data centres and move all of its applications to the cloud, so what is still holding some of them back? Often we hear about cost and security considerations, but within businesses that run bespoke mission-critical apps, the IT team...

The compliance conundrum: Why hybrid cloud is key with GDPR around the corner

With the Global Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on the horizon, businesses that wish to operate in the European Union are having to spend more time than ever thinking about compliance.

Not only does all personally identifiable customer data need to be accounted for – a task that is easier said than done for many organisations – internal processes also have to be updated and employees need to be educated to ensure the compliance deadline of May 25 2018 is met.

Of course, GDPR is just one...

IDC forecasts global spending on public cloud services to hit $160bn in 2018

Global spending on public cloud services is forecast to hit $160 billion in 2018 at an increase of 23.2% the previous year, according to figures from IDC.

Software as a service (SaaS) will remain the largest cloud category with almost two thirds of all public cloud spending this year, followed by infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS). Of the SaaS spend, applications purchases will dominate the segment, with CRM and enterprise resource management (ERM) apps seeing the most...

Consuming public cloud services on-premise: A guide

As we enter our second decade of its existence, the role of the public cloud is changing. Infrastructure as a service altered the way that virtualised resources are consumed, but what has emerged is far more powerful than allocating compute, storage, and networking on-demand.

The derivative services that the public cloud providers now offer include speech-to-text, sentiment analysis, and machine learning functionality that are constantly being improved. While it is often prudent to run an application on...

A 2018 cloud trend – the return of the on-premises solution?

Research published earlier this year by the Cloud Industry Forum (CIF) revealed that the rate of cloud adoption by UK-based businesses has reached 88%. The top three reasons respondents gave for cloud take-up were delivery flexibility, operational cost savings and scalability.

For many businesses, public cloud has been an attractive, effective way to build out their existing models and experiment with new ones, but it has often been...

Why the overall cloud opportunity moves far beyond the public cloud

If you want to appreciate the full extent of the cloud computing phenomena, then you need to comprehend the ongoing impact to the IT ecosystem. It's been fueled by a disruptive series of innovations that have enabled software developers to accelerate the speed of digital transformation.

The cloud delivery and consumption model has revolutionized the entire IT industry. But the cloud opportunity extends well beyond the public cloud - which makes up less than half of all cloud-related spending today -...

The multi-cloud imbroglio: What is it, what drives it, and how do you manage it?

A research report from BMC Software argues organisations are struggling to manage multi-cloud environments – with four in five respondents saying current multi-cloud management approaches need rethinking.

The study, which polled 1,000 IT decision makers across 11 countries, found that drivers of multi-cloud strategies were less than clear. The most popular reason was cost optimisation, cited by 45% of respondents, with agility (44%) and mitigating risk (40%) also highly cited.

It may however not be as...

The six keys to competing and succeeding in a cloud-first environment

Cloud computing has come a long way over the last several years. It has gone from an emerging technology used in tech startups, to a catalyst for driving enterprise business transformations. According to IDC’s CloudView 2017 report, 70 percent of CIOs say they embrace a “cloud-first IT strategy.” This shows that cloud has moved way beyond the early-adopted phase, where born in the cloud startups were the only...

How China is leading public cloud services growth

The ongoing shift to cloud computing continues across the globe. The worldwide public cloud services market grew 28.6 percent year-over-year in the first half of 2017 (1H17) with revenues totaling $63.2 billion, according to the latest market study by International Data Corporation (IDC).

"Public cloud adoption is accelerating in large part as enterprises recognize that the cloud has become the launchpad for virtually every new IT innovation in the last 24 months -- including AI, blockchain, quantum computing and...

AWS launches C5 instances for EC2 alongside new 'cloud-optimised' hypervisor

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the availability of C5 instances, aimed at more compute-intensive workloads for the EC2 cloud.

The C5 instances – three from the sharp end in Amazon’s compute class, behind G2, P2 and F1 – were introduced as the newest iteration back in November last year at the company’s Re:Invent show. The C5 promises 3.0 GHz Intel...

How the ‘cloud-first enterprise’ continues to gain traction

The cloud-first enterprise is gaining in prominence, through multi-cloud strategies, losing data centres, and adopting cloud-native infrastructures.

That is the key finding from a new report released by hybrid cloud IT operations management provider OpsRamp. The study, which polled IT leaders in companies with 500 or more employees, also found that public cloud services are grabbing a bigger share of IT budgets, and that security – again – is the primary reason for reticent companies sitting it...

Revenues from the global public cloud services market stand at $63.2 billion (£48.2bn) with the market growing 28.6% year over year in the first half of 2017, according to IDC.

The largest segment, by some distance, remains software as a service (SaaS), totalling $43.4bn comprising 68.7% of the market share. This is down from the first half of 2016, where SaaS saw 71.8% market share, yet the segment still grew 22.9% year over year.

The fastest growing segment, whilst remaining the smallest, was platform...

Enterprises want more public cloud – yet security issues block their path

A new survey released by AlgoSec sets the scene on organisational cloud deployments: almost a third of respondents say they plan to increase their public cloud usage in the next 12 to 18 months, but major security challenges remain across hybrid enterprise networks both during and after migrations.

The study, titled ‘Hybrid Cloud Environments: The State of Security’, polled 450 senior security and network professionals and found a lack of visibility and managing security policies consistently were...

Multi-cloud strategies ‘urgent’ for European organisations, says IDC

A quarter of IT firms in Europe are already operating tiered applications across on-premise and off-premise environments; yet only a few companies have long term strategies in place, according to the latest note from IDC.

The study, which polled more than 800 IT and line of business decision makers in 11 European countries, found that while 31% prefer to hook up their systems to apps on a public cloud with back-end systems on-premise, 8% went for ‘bursting’ capacity into off-premise. 40% of...
