Analysing the importance of cloud usage tracking and cost management

(c)iStock.com/kertlis

If organisations could track all cloud consumption and usage across the enterprise, the majority (57%) would utilise it to improve IT forecasting.

That was the key takeaway from a survey undertaken by enterprise software provider Cloud Cruiser, who collared 279 IT professionals at the recent Microsoft Ignite event in Chicago. Interestingly, 16% of respondents admitted they did not use Microsoft cloud technologies.

39% of those polled said they would use more wide-ranging tracking skills...

Why enterprises need containers and Docker

(c)iStock.com/JVT

At DockerCon 2015 last week, it was very clear that Docker is poised to transform enterprise IT.

While it traditionally takes years for a software innovation — and especially an open source one — to reach the enterprise, Docker is defying all the rules. Analysts expect Docker will be the norm in enterprises by 2016, less than two years after its 1.0 release.

Why are Yelp, Goldman Sachs, and other enterprises using Docker? Because in many ways, enterprises have been unable to take...

(c)iStock.com/MrIncredible

The report argues there is a “clear trend” for larger organisations to run Office 365 as opposed to Google Apps – Office 365-based organisations are more than four times larger and five years older on average,...

Real use cases: Why 50% of enterprises are choosing hybrid cloud

(c)iStock.com/marekuliasz

Enterprises are shaping the cloud to fit their needs, and the result is overwhelmingly a hybrid of public, private, and on-premises clouds. Today, nineteen percent (19%) of organizations manage hybrid clouds and an additional 60% plan to deploy them. Gartner estimates that hybrid cloud adoption will near 50% by 2017.

Why are enterprises going hybrid? Below are four use cases that demonstrate how enterprises determine what, when and how to move to the cloud.

Case 1: Testing...

Hybrid cloud implementations: The sooner the better for the CIO

(c)iStock.com/Artem_Egorov

Adopting cloud can often raise as many questions as it answers. The business questions focus on how cloud will deliver increased agility, efficiency and productivity; but predicting the answers to these questions in an ever-changing landscape is no easy task. As a result, many CIOs are grappling with complex 10-year roadmaps, and missing out on the ‘quick wins’ a hybrid approach could deliver in the interim. Through an incremental approach, small shifts to cloud can be...

The confusion around hybrid: Cloud isn’t for everyone, but everyone can use a bit of cloud

(c)iStock.com/Erik Khalitov

I was delighted to see so many folks attend our Tech Meet Up last week in London.  Not only was it a great networking opportunity, but we also hosted a stimulating panel that generated much discussion on the night.  Here I’ve captured a few takeaways.

The panel included Jeremy Bowman, Director of IT Operations at iland customer Fusion Business Solutions, and Peter Godden, Vice President EMEA for Zerto, one of our key partners. Discussion centred on the many reasons...

Analysing the differences between cloud orchestration and cloud automation

(c)iStock.com/TARIK KIZILKAYA

What is the difference between cloud orchestration and cloud automation? An exploration of these two terms is more than a vocabulary exercise; it highlights a key challenge for teams looking to improve IT processes.

In most situations, cloud automation describes a task or function accomplished without human intervention. Cloud orchestration describes the arranging and coordination of automated tasks, ultimately resulting in a consolidated process or workflow.

It is simplest to see this in an example. To...

Managing hybrid clouds: What team do IT leaders need?

(c)iStock.com/Erik Khalitov

As most enterprise IT leaders know, transitioning IT staff to a cloud-based service delivery model is often more challenging than transitioning the infrastructure itself.

A collaborative, vertically-oriented IT organisational structure is crucial to the success of any cloud infrastructure, and yet the advice enterprises receive—usually some variation of “break down silos”—is not especially useful in an organisation with hundreds or even thousands of IT...

Windows Server 2003 end of life upgrade: Why many companies are leaving it “quite late”

(c)iStock.com/unclejoe

Updated Everyone occasionally likes a comfortable pair of shoes. Businesses, when forced to upgrade their legacy tech, are no different. UK-based cloud provider Exponential-e has sounded a dire warning to enterprises hoping to cling onto their Windows Server 2003 deployments as the 100 day countdown to support switch-off begins at Microsoft towers.

The arguments against keeping Windows Server 2003, which will have support stopped on July 14, are straightforward; it’ll be a hacker’s...

Why hybrid cloud is the way forward for IT leaders - and how to get there

(c)iStock.com/Erikona

Updated As cloud continues to be mainstream, the question amongst progressive IT departments when rolling out new applications is shifting from “why cloud?” to “which cloud?” Currently, the public cloud is dwarfed by private and on-premise solutions, with VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger stating that the latter represents over 90 per cent of the total business. Furthermore, Gartner has estimated that by 2020, on-premise cloud will...

(c)iStock.com/Henrik5000

Interoute CTO Matthew Finnie: Why the conversation needs to change in the cloud arena

(c)iStock.com/4774344sean

Sipping a coffee outside the hubbub of Cloud Expo Europe, Matthew Finnie, chief technical officer at virtual data centre provider Interoute, has something on his mind.

The vast majority of the activity going on in the ExCeL arena, he surmises, will be vendors pitching their position. Nothing unusual with that at a trade show, you might say, but Finnie wants the conversations to go one step further.

“I think one of the things we’re hoping for is people start to put two and two...
