CIOs look to hybrid cloud future – with security a positive

CIOs are preferring hybrid cloud models with security the primary motivation for adoption, according to a new study from NetApp.

The research, which polled 750 CIOs and IT managers in France, Germany and the UK, saw more than half of respondents in each country saying they use a combination of private and public cloud. Germany came out on top with 69%, compared with France (61%) and UK (58%). In terms of partner options, local service providers are the most popular, cited by a combined 26% of respondents,...

More of the same: Challenges with DevOps evident but potential vast in new report

Quali, a company which specialises in providing cloud and DevOps automation software, took to a variety of US industry events during 2016 to ask attendees about their DevOps practices and the challenges they face. The verdict: almost half of applications in traditional environments were considered complex for cloud, while the current vendor ecosystem is open-ended with no main player winning out.

This makes for something of a refreshing change when compared to the majority of such studies which hit this...

Three reasons 2017 will be the year of the hybrid cloud

The enterprise will increasingly live in a hybrid IT world in 2017, split between on-premises solutions and cloud environments. Recent reports have revealed that many organisations have already started to split their cloud budgets between public and private deployments, creating demand for hybrid cloud strategies that give businesses greater flexibility as well as more workload deployment options.

It’s easy to see why...

What should CIOs expect from their managed cloud provider?

Opinion As digital transformation continues to dominate the IT landscape, cloud computing has helped a wealth of organisations to evolve. So true is the fact that Gartner predicts that by 2020, a corporate “no-cloud” policy will be as rare as a “no-internet” policy is today. The CIO of 2017 undoubtedly needs to embrace the cloud, but the transition is still a sizeable task without adequate help and guidance.

Hybrid cloud analytics: Don’t be cloud-washed by the new term on the block

Not surprisingly, with all the momentum in hybrid cloud infrastructure, we’re starting to hear the term “hybrid cloud analytics” pop up in the modern business intelligence (BI) market. However, it’s a term that is being overused and misunderstood as those in the industry seek to align with the latest trend. We see the future value of hybrid cloud computing as helping to empower customers to embrace a cloud strategy of their own versus having it dictated to them by a vendor.

A hybrid...

Software-defined storage, hybrid clouds, and getting the performance right: A guide

(c)iStock.com/4x-image

In today’s data-intensive, hyper-connected world, storage solutions built on the vertical scaling model have become impractical and expensive. Enterprises are driven by the need to remain competitive while storing and managing petabytes of data. In this vein, ESG senior analyst Mark Peters believes that there is at last a straight line between how storage is configured and business value – if organisations can...

What is the point of hybrid cloud – or, is it time to re-evaluate hybrid?

(c)iStock.com/BrianAJackson

Opinion There used to be a buzz around hybrid cloud. The idea was simple, host your mission critical applications in-house where they were more secure and manageable and then burst into the cloud for additional capacity.

Sounds great; but in reality, it didn't really work. Many organisations tried and while some succeeded most failed. Why? The primary issue was network latency between stacks but there was also a huge degree of complexity in orchestrating different technology platforms...

Is hybrid cloud in danger of becoming lost in translation?

(c)iStock.com/DundStock

In the last year hybrid cloud adoption has ramped up as both cloud users and cloud vendors have matured. Yet there is still confusion in the market about what it means to go truly hybrid with many CIOs unable to agree when it comes to the true definition of hybrid cloud.

According to the National Institute of Standards and Commerce, “[Hybrid] cloud infrastructure is a composition of two or more distinct cloud infrastructures (private, community or public) that remain unique...

Why flexibility in cloud services is key to ERP success in today’s age

(c)iStock.com/mmac72

In the fast-moving digital world, being able to quickly adapt to disruptive business processes and changing business needs is key to success and survival. While organisations might be able to adapt their strategy and culture, they also need their business systems to adapt to these new processes and requirements. The need for flexibility and near real-time response to changing business processes is especially essential for an organisation’s core ERP system.

Here are five reasons why...

How serverless, cognitive computing, and blockchain will influence cloud this year

(c)iStock.com/baona

As the sun rises on 2017, a highlight of this New Year will be the gathering strength of the cloud. If the big question posed by businesses and their CIOs in 2016 was whether they should migrate to the cloud; in 2017 the question will be what is the best way to get there.

A recent IBM survey of more than 1,000 C-suite executives from 18 industries found that almost every company we surveyed is using cloud, but only in pockets of their business. 78% of...

Security through visibility: Seeing into virtual and cloud networks

(c)iStock.com/alashi

Imagine an IT security team as a navy crew at sea. A torpedo blasts the ship’s side below the water line. As the water floods in, they can’t even see the hole, let alone fix it. Instead, everyone turns to the pumps to keep the ship afloat.

This is the state of many security programs today. Despite a plethora of point solutions, security teams lack visibility into what they’re trying to protect, their most pressing risks and the security tools at their disposal. Thus...

Why are CIOs demanding hybrid cloud?

Cloud is big business. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is approaching $10 billion annual revenue. Microsoft Azure is approaching $3bn annual revenue. Then there’s Oracle Cloud, positioning themselves as the enterprise cloud for customers.

When a virtualisation giant like VMware and a cloud giant like AWS partner at an engineering level to deliver VMware on AWS bare metal so that customers can have a seamless hybrid cloud experience, you know the hybrid cloud model is for real.

If you are a VP/director of...

VMware notes good and bad with decentralised IT – and how cloud is driving it

(c)iStock.com/DNY59

It’s a discussion which has rumbled on for years; does a centralised or decentralised model of IT work best? According to new research commissioned by VMware, cloud computing has become key to the decentralisation of IT – and while it may ease the pressure in some areas, security, management and compliance issues remain.

The latest release, titled State of the Cloud, represents the second half of VMware’s study, with the former, The IT Archipelago, being conducted by the...

Verizon argues importance of hybrid IT as CIOs agree cloud improves competitiveness

(c)iStock.com/James Brey

More than half of CIOs polled by Verizon and Harvard Business Review say their use of cloud computing has improved their organisation’s competitiveness; but hybrid IT is the primary method of coping with digital transformation struggles.

The study, which polled more than 300 business and IT executives worldwide, found that 63% of organisations are pursuing a hybrid IT approach, yet a third (32%) are struggling to integrate cloud with other systems.

How to thrive in a hybrid cloud world: Data governance and management best practice

(c)iStock.com/Erik Khalitov

The vast majority of companies who are moving to cloud applications also have a significant current investment in on-premise operational applications and on-premise capabilities around data warehousing, business intelligence and analytics. This means that most of them will be working with a hybrid cloud/on-premise data management environment for the foreseeable future.

Moving at ‘cloud speed’, and setting up a new application in a matter of hours, is a big advantage in...

Cutting through the noise and sorting out the hybrid and multi-cloud imbroglio

(c)iStock.com/BrianAJackson

The hybrid cloud: it’s a buzzword which refuses to go away.

This month is a case in point. Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft, arguably the two biggest and most influential cloud computing organisations, both made announcements on the theme.

The general availability of Windows Server 2016 and System Center 2016 was seen as “another big step in hybrid cloud”, Microsoft argued, with a “cloud-ready OS” which “inherently enables hybrid cloud.” AWS, on...
