By Matt Piercy, VP and general manager, Zscaler EMEA

The business IT environment is changing rapidly and, as a result, today’s CIOs have to tackle a number of big challenges. 20 years ago, applications and data were stored on an individual’s computer. Today, cloud-delivered applications, services, and infrastructure are transforming business processes, services, and models.

How the IoT and mobility has made cloud more than a ‘nice to have’

In its Worldwide Cloud IT Infrastructure Hardware Spending Forecast, 2016–2020, IDC forecast that the spending on cloud IT infrastructure would grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.6 percent and reach $54.6 billion by 2019. As the move to the cloud becomes inexorable for organisations, they are faced with the important task of properly managing this significant architectural change.

Perhaps the most critical facet of digital transformation...

Mobility, IoT and SDN helping in network refreshes – but security may be an afterthought

(c)iStock.com/plusphoto

Good news and bad news, according to the latest research from Dimension Data; enterprise networks are being refreshed more frequently, but it’s coming at a cost on the security side.

The classic image of the enterprise network sagging under a series of legacy technologies is becoming a thing of the past, the company argues in its latest Network Barometer Report due to the pressure from technologies such as mobility, software defined networking (SDN) and the Internet of Things...

Is a cloud-managed network right for your business?

(c)iStock.com/Maxiphoto

Successful businesses have mastered how to manage their network and leverage it as a platform to engage staff and customers. Increased dependency, combined with the need for pervasive connectivity, greater insights and control over behavior, is driving organisations to embrace a cloud-managed network (CMN) model.

A CMN uses a software as a service (SaaS) model to securely deliver ease-of-use and simplicity for control and analytics of on premise devices being deployed over...

Maximising the potential of the Industrial Internet – through the right networks

(c)iStock.com/DrAfter123

Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) often use extremely large files, which make remote working and collaboration difficult to achieve. Most businesses are able to work remotely with laptops, smartphones and tablet PCs, but the processing power required to create, store and share CAD files over a wide area network is often prohibitive. Yet with the power of the internet they can work remotely and collaboratively.

The...

Big data, cloud, mobility, and why IT needs to move at the speed of business

“We change our behaviour when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing. Consequences give us the pain that motivates us to change” – Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend

Successful businesses require the ability to change and increasingly to adapt quickly, to be agile to new approaches and technologies and be flexible to the needs of the business and customers.

We are at the wake of monumental change and how businesses service and engage...

Box raises $175m with IPO, but what is next?

Tomorrow's Schedule: 7 AM: Wake up, drink lots of coffee 8 AM: Do this and that 10 AM: Work

— Aaron Levie (@levie) January 23, 2015

Box enjoyed a very successful IPO last month, raising around $175 million despite a lot of ridiculous nay-saying about its growth strategy. I have defended its business model extensively in the past, so it was great to see a company that was once foolishly dismissed as “the Groupon of SaaS” enjoys such an...

Salesforce rolls out new Salesforce1 app, launches UK data centre

At his earnings call last week, Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff noted how he could run his business from his mobile device.

Well, with a few tweaks now you can too: Salesforce has launched the new Salesforce1 mobile app at the World Tour event in London, with the product being available in the summer roll-out.

The app, which the promotional material perhaps optimistically compares with an enterprise-eseque Facebook, promises more than 30 features, including easier access for salespeople to reports and...

Green IT: Does it still matter?

By Adrian Thirkill, managing director, Easynet Global Services UK

Five years ago, you couldn’t move for ‘green’ claims from businesses. In a rush to become the first businesses to go carbon neutral, hoards of companies offset air miles, replanted forests, and invested in wind farms. “We turn our lights off at night!” they whooped. “We put monitors on automatic standby!” they gushed.

All admirable and well-intentioned.  But there’s a worrying hint of...

Why cloud and mobile security management is gaining momentum

As more business applications move to the cloud, security seems to be top-of-mind for all concerned parties. Also, the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to work trend, along with more smartphones and tablets that require wireless connectivity in the workplace, has increased the level of concern for many IT managers and executives. Keeping business systems safe and protecting the data that they hold has never been more difficult to achieve, according to the latest market study by Ovum. The typical corporate ICT environment continues to be threatened by security attacks -- ranging from opportunistic hackers using pre-built tools through to targeted, well-resourced, state-sponsored cyber activity.Ovum believes that online attack volumes will continue to rise and no...

Couchbase CEO: Let Oracle, SAP, IBM play in the “old” database market

The database wars are about to kick off in spectacular style. Not just Oracle vs SAP – as Big Red announced its new in-memory database at the start of this week – but relational vs NoSQL.

Oracle and SAP have been making plenty of noise about their in-memory capability; SAP co-CEO Bill McDermott once claimed that its HANA technology was “the fastest growing...

NSW state government in Australia mobilises cloud services pilots

Steve Hodgkinson, Research Director, Public Sector TechnologyThe New South Wales state government in Australia is taking visionary but practical steps towards cloud services adoption via a program of pilot projects. The projects recognize the need to treat cloud services as an emerging trend to be investigated and evaluated hands-on. It is a practical organizational learning exercise, not an ideological quest or a whole-of-government “grand plan”. Cloud services adoption is best driven at an agency-by-agency...

Brocade’s Simon Pamplin: Digging deep into the future of SDN

With software defined networking (SDN), the network as we know it, along with the way businesses use computing processes, could be changed beyond all recognition.

And Brocade is at the very heart of that shift, being founder members of OpenFlow and OpenStack and pushing ahead with technologies that ensure its customers are SDN-ready.

Separating the data and control planes, SDN, as the name suggests, puts a layer of software between the components a network runs on and the network admin running them, leading...
