Cloud adoption equals security: The CIO’s paradox

(c)iStock.com/Alfonso Cacciola

Cloud technology is one of the most secure ways to store and share data that the world has ever seen. But with data security making the headlines with increasing frequency you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise. High profile hackings have at times derailed the industry’s attempts to make the case for the cloud.

Keeping data secure is not a new challenge, however. Businesses have been grappling to protect their data for decades; be it from missing paper files or...

Cloud usage is rocketing amongst UK business users – but the final decision making falls to the head of IT or the chief information officer in almost three in five (59%) cases, according to latest research.

The research, from cloud hosting provider Cobweb Solutions, shows more organisations are turning to cloud for all their business needs, with UK cloud penetration reaching a high of 84%.

The CXO view: We’re still unconvinced on cloud storage security

(c)iStock.com/4774344sean

Less than one in three delegates polled at the Infosec 2015 event in London believe the cloud is a safe storage solution for corporate data.

The survey from digital encryption and USB specialist iStorage, which questioned more than 270 respondents including heads of IT, CIOs and CTOs, saw almost half (48%) say they do use cloud technology to store confidential information. 54% of those polled say they still use USB devices to store information.

Over three quarters (78%) said they were currently...

Hybrid cloud implementations: The sooner the better for the CIO

(c)iStock.com/Artem_Egorov

Adopting cloud can often raise as many questions as it answers. The business questions focus on how cloud will deliver increased agility, efficiency and productivity; but predicting the answers to these questions in an ever-changing landscape is no easy task. As a result, many CIOs are grappling with complex 10-year roadmaps, and missing out on the ‘quick wins’ a hybrid approach could deliver in the interim. Through an incremental approach, small shifts to cloud can be...

CIO survey reveals importance of mainframe – but also the skills gap with it

(c)iStock.com/mevans

IBM celebrated the 50th anniversary of the mainframe last year – and new research from Compuware reveals the technology is still as important as ever for CIOs.

The research, which polled 350 enterprise CIOs, found almost nine in 10 (88%) see the mainframe as a “key business asset over the next decade”, while a similar number (89%) see mainframe code as “valuable corporate intellectual property” and four in five (78%) believe it is a “key enabler of...

The confusion around hybrid: Cloud isn’t for everyone, but everyone can use a bit of cloud

(c)iStock.com/Erik Khalitov

I was delighted to see so many folks attend our Tech Meet Up last week in London.  Not only was it a great networking opportunity, but we also hosted a stimulating panel that generated much discussion on the night.  Here I’ve captured a few takeaways.

The panel included Jeremy Bowman, Director of IT Operations at iland customer Fusion Business Solutions, and Peter Godden, Vice President EMEA for Zerto, one of our key partners. Discussion centred on the many reasons...

The CIO focus on public cloud: "A viable option, but not a top consideration”

(c)iStock.com/Toltek

A survey from analyst house Gartner has found that infrastructure and operations leaders should institute a ‘cloud-first’ consideration for every project on an application by application basis.

The report, entitled “Flipping to Digital Leadership: The 2015 CIO Agenda”, surveyed more than 2800 CIOs and found public cloud was an option for IT projects, but only a first consideration for a small minority.

15% of those polled aren’t considering cloud computing...

(c)iStock.com/DragonImages

CIOs surveyed by investment firm Piper Jaffray in its latest study have reported dissatisfaction with public cloud solutions, and are departing Google as their choice of public cloud provider.

The report, which polled 112 CIOs across eight industries, found nearly three quarters (73%) had allocated budget to private, hybrid or public cloud projects in 2015, yet the security of public cloud was cited by 35% of respondents as the primary reason for keeping data on premise.

Do you need a cloud strategist for your migration? Most firms don’t think so

Despite the vast majority of companies looking to expand their cloud infrastructure over time, only 14% of respondents in a NuoDB survey said they had a specific cloud strategist to oversee it.

60% of the 200 plus respondents at the Cloud Expo and AWS re:Invent events said they saw cloud as one of their companies’ top three business or IT initiatives, yet seem happy enough for their current IT team to take charge of their cloud migration projects.

This is seen as particularly...

Cloud computing has been named as one of 12 disruptive technologies which will change the relationship between the CIO and the boardroom, according to a report by Advanced 365.

The evolving role of the CIO, and the C-suite in general, has long been a feature of modern business. Opinions differ, whether it’s a wag who proclaims CIO to mean ‘career is over’, or whether it’s a report which advocates more fluency and fluidity between executives.

The Advanced 365...

Yes, we’re all in the cloud - but use it to develop enterprise apps? Not yet

A report from CipherCloud and Gigaom Research has revealed while most companies are in the cloud, they’re still reticent about using it to develop enterprise applications.

According to the research, just less than half (44%) of respondents had already made cloud deployments, with only 14% saying it would take them more than a year to deploy. 83% of respondents said they had adopted public cloud. Yet only 21% of those surveyed said they were using the cloud as a platform to...

Is your CFO hot under the collar? It might be due to missed cloud revenue

Even though ensuring the company is iterating and innovating is more the CIO’s bag, the CIO and the CFO both have a keen interest in the bottom line. New research from Canopy has found that 81% of CIOs and CFOs worry their business will become uncompetitive if they miss out on cloud revenues.

The research, of 950 CIOs and CFOs in mid market and enterprise firms in the US and Europe, further noted that three quarters of CFOs think their business is missing out on revenue...

Assessing how cloud computing has transformed the workspace

Today’s workplace is an entirely different animal to just five years ago – and it’s growing and changing at a rapid rate.

The huge amount of enterprise mobility solutions on the market are enabling employees to do various tasks on their smartphones and tablets; as Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said on the unveiling of the Salesforce1 app, he could run his entire business from his phone.

Yet none of this...
