How companies can tell good cloud sprawl from bad: A guide

Now that operating in the cloud is officially mainstream, it’s gotten a reputation for costing more than expected. Cloud sprawl, however, is rarely the problem – in fact, we like to think of sprawl as a symptom. On the bright side, it’s often a symptom of creativity and innovation by your IT team. On the dark side, it’s also often a symptom of poor planning and a lack of governance.

Overused but misunderstood: Unlocking clarity and confidence in the cloud

The manufacturing industry might have been slow to adopt cloud-based technologies, but the benefits are now widely recognised with many companies relying on it to automate processes and drive efficiencies. In fact, you can’t move in today’s technology driven world without hearing the term ‘cloud’. It provides the foundation for the way we run our lives both at work and at home—so much so that the term itself is almost redundant.

Although cloud is an accepted part of...

Why a holistic approach to cloud transformation is key to success

As applications increasingly move to the cloud, businesses often voice concerns about soaring WAN costs as well as latency issues when accessing apps. The much-anticipated benefits of a cloud transformation, including greater efficiency and agility, risk being eroded when the user experience is unsatisfactory and costs spin out of control.

How, then, can organisations successfully tackle their transformation projects to avoid these pitfalls and fully realise the benefits of the...

Hyperscaler cloud capex declines – but ‘enormous barriers’ remain to reach the top table

The spending of the cloud hyperscalers has come to a comparative halt, according to the latest note from Synergy Research.

The analyst firm found that in the first quarter of 2019 total capex across the largest cloud vendors totalled just over $26 billion, representing a 2% downturn year on year. This excludes Google’s $2.4bn outlay on Manhattan real estate which pushed the Q118 figures even further, and not including...

Why the real multi-cloud motivator is choice - rather than lock-in

Multi-cloud is one of the biggest initiatives for enterprises today; however, if you analyse the justification for this trend, so much of it is driven by fear — fear of lock-in, fear of outages, fear of cost. And while those concerns may be valid, the enterprises that are realising the value of multi-cloud have an even more compelling reason for it: choice.

A few years ago, battle lines were drawn. For the most part you either used AWS, Azure, or GCP in addition...

Why legacy IT vendors are seeking cloud niche viability

Leading hyperscale cloud service providers continue to disrupt the traditional IT infrastructure vendor landscape, as more enterprise CIOs and CTOs expand their adoption of multi-cloud strategies that marginalise the remaining applications for on-premises data centres.

Legacy IT vendors that were reluctant to evolve their business model will now seek niche cloud market segments where they can differentiate their offerings. There's no viable growth path that's based upon...
