How to become a 'dynamic' cloud user to reap cost and agility benefits

As organisations move towards more sophisticated multi-cloud environments, leveraging DevOps, containers and more, they will see greater agility, lower cost, and faster time to market.

This is the verdict of digital performance monitoring and management provider New Relic, who gathered more than 500 responses from organisations across the US, UK, Germany, and France. As first reported by ZDNet, the company put its findings

Seven key network metrics for a cloud-driven world

Today’s IT teams aren’t so different from the IT teams of days gone by. They’re still committed to running businesses smoothly by testing technology, measuring the results, and re-calibrating. But much of the technology they’re using and managing has changed dramatically. Enterprises are much more distributed than they used to be, with more remote offices and users accessing resources...

The top three approaches for improving cloud migration and security

For many enterprises, migrating towards a cloud delivered approach for IT systems is an attractive proposition. Cost efficiency and business agility are big drivers for CIOs to make the move.  Most modern companies have either started migrating toward a public cloud or they are in the early planning and analysis phases of doing so.

At the same time, making the jump from on-site infrastructure to cloud-hosted platforms is not free of challenges such as, regulations, data governance, billing and cost...

Navigating pain points when migrating your enterprise to the cloud

Many enterprises are jumping on the cloud to modernize their IT. Cloud computing not only provides an on-demand highly scalable compute, storage and network infrastructure, it allows IT to spin up an environment in minutes, driving agility the enterprise has never seen before.

However, moving workloads to cloud or refactoring them to run natively in the cloud is not easy. Once those workloads are running in the cloud, monitoring and managing them is required. IT needs all the help it can...

More apps are being stored in the cloud – but are we putting too much faith there?

(c)iStock.com/mushakesa

While two thirds of organisations polled by cloud storage and data protection provider CTERA Networks deploys more than a quarter of its applications in the cloud, protecting them is a different story altogether.

The findings appear in a report entitled ‘Game of Clouds’ – no prizes for guessing the theme – which makes the research concept clear.

“The emergence and tremendous growth of cloud computing in the enterprise is taking IT environments to uncharted...

Why preparation is key to securing your cloud migration

(c)iStock.com/fazon1

The benefits of big data are real. And with so many businesses looking to migrate their data to the cloud, they want to make sure everything arrives safely and intact. After all, much of this data contains sensitive and proprietary information, and the prospect of moving it from the safety of the corporate firewall to a cloud environment is cause for concern.

Still, as data volumes continue their exponential growth, moving vast sets of structured and unstructured data from the restrictive...

Breaking boundaries: How Freightos achieved high speed graph search in the cloud

(c)iStock.com/suriyasilsaksom

The problem

Freightos’s application runs heavy-duty graph algorithms against a very large dataset. This requires some unusual design principles, which no cloud platform today is optimised for. But we succeeded in building the application on top of the Google App Engine Flexible Environment, a new offering from Google, positioned somewhere between Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). Even Flexible Environment, which is still in beta, does not...

FCA gives green light to financial firms using cloud technologies – but with a caveat

(c)iStock.com/Keith Kiska

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has issued a series of guidelines on how financial firms can migrate to the cloud and provisionally giving the green light to them.

“We see no fundamental reason why cloud services (including public cloud services) cannot be implemented, with appropriate consideration, in a manner that complies with our rules,” the report notes.

The authority notes that they have successfully supported many firms to use cloud and other IT service...

The key steps when migrating from a physical environment to the cloud

(c)iStock.com/BsWei

As companies continue to step up the pace of migration to the cloud, many find themselves in the situation of having to bridge the gap between their physical and cloud infrastructures, which brings new challenges. IT has applications it regards as critical but lines of business have different application requirements that they regard as critical. As a result, IT often ends up becoming overloaded with requests, and as they attempt to satisfy demand with more resources, this can lead to...

Research sheds light on changing role of IT admin through cloud

(c)iStock.com/baona

IT administrators in organisations which have migrated to Google Apps or Office 365 argue they spend much less time doing mundane activities – but it’s not exactly ‘put your feet up’ time either.

That’s the key finding from the latest study by BetterCloud on the state of the cloud office. Back in July, the first set of results was...
