Every 6 seconds a new virtual machine “cloud” is born

IT business leaders turn on one VMware virtual machine every six seconds, that's faster than the rate of babies born in the United States: 1 every 8 seconds.

A virtual machine of course is the kernel of cloud computing, a device enabling SMEs to deploy virtual resources in the cloud using a utility pricing model from Virtual Internet.  A range of enterprise cloud offerings are powered by VMware software in the Virtual Internet Datacentre, which are...

Dell continues cloud alignment with Wyse acquisition

Dell has finalised a deal to acquire a leader in thin client cloud solutions Wyse Technology, in a move that is being seen as a clear development of the computing giant’s strategic shift to end-to-end enterprise solutions provider.

The acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, is one of a number of acquisitions Dell has made in recent weeks, and benefits both firms, opening Wyse up to Dell’s vast customer base, and enabling Dell to expand its enterprise desktop virtualisation functionality.

How WAN optimisation can improve your network stability

As data volumes continue to swell, organisations are continuously faced with the challenge of optimising their underlying network infrastructure in order to support the increasing flow of traffic.  Virtualisation, cloud computing, and Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDIs) deliver enormous management and costs savings, however, these benefits can easily be lost if application performance hampers end user productivity or backend processes, as often happens when applications are delivered...

Cloud Life Cycle Management: How Do I Patch It?

The complexity associated with patching, service packs, hotfixes, upgrades and firmware updates, defined as general life cycle activities, are nothing new to IT professionals. This has been an ongoing effort for many years now, and we have all come to expect that vendors will provide regular updates that include bug fixes, security patches and feature enhancements.

We have all experienced that common call to technical support to be greeted by the phrase: “are you running the most recent...

5 Things SMB’s Should Consider Before Deciding To Go Virtual

When dealing with many of our SMB clients (small or medium businesses) that are not virtualized, the conversation usually starts with, “I have 5-7 year old servers that are starting to have issues and are not under maintenance, and I need to update them.” I fully admit that I am biased, and the first thing I suggest is to virtualize and sleep better at night. Here are some things I talk to them about in my conversations.

There are five things to think about before deciding to go virtual or not:

  • How...

3 Things The Cloud is NOT

Ask 10 people what Cloud computing is and you’ll probably get 8 different answers and 2 blank stares.  Even in the face of a definition from NIST, Cloud computing is evolving too fast for any single expression of its capabilities or future.  In the face of all this hype and...

Inadequate IT security creates 'perfect storm for hackers'

Fears around new technologies like cloud computing, smartphones and virtualisation are central to the security concerns of many IT departments, while pressure to improve business productivity and a lack of collaboration with different business divisions is leaving enterprise IT open to increased security risks, according to a new report.

The annual ‘State of Endpoint’ study, carried out by the Poneman Institute for endpoint management and security specialist Lumension, found that the...
