Is the cloud’s fatal flaw offering users too much choice?

(c)iStock.com/triloks

The last few years have seen an influx of ‘disruptive’ new tech startups entering the marketplace with all sorts of software as a service (SaaS) and app solutions for small businesses and larger enterprises. On the face of it, this is great news. However, the phrase “spoilt for choice” could also apply, and might even be causing paralysis in cloud service adoption.

With regards to document management systems (DMS), centralisation has been the goal for many years;...

Why more and more organisations are adopting network virtualisation

The ‘iron’ of routers and switches has been the backbone of the enterprise for decades. But in recent years, high profile companies have challenged long-held ideas of what makes a network strategic and powerful.

Leaps in agility, flexibility, security, efficiency and scalability are only possible when you abstract or virtualise network services and decoupling them from hardware, as this paper from VMware explains.

The next phase of SDN: Software defined campus networks

(c)iStock.com/Aapthamithra

Enterprise and university campus networks have enjoyed decades of architectural permanence. For years, these networks have been built with cookie cutter designs, with the only critical decision points being the number of ports and users. But new challenges presented today – more devices (both in number and type), mobility, security, and diverse application traffic – the management of these networks is finally coming to the forefront. Software-defined networking (SDN) is...

(c)iStock.com/Macjej Noskowski

For years the benefits of the cloud have been the subject of much debate within the IT industry. In the past, sceptics claimed that the cloud wasn’t reliable or secure — although Gartner sought to dispel that myth. Now, the sceptics are harder to find and Gartner doesn’t have to dispel as many cloud myths. Our latest Businesses @ Work report shows that companies are not only enabling...

Are you being served? Big data and the disrupters of customer service

(c)iStock.com/sorbetto

We often hear the buzzword phrases of customer service, quality of service, customer first and net promoter score, and both the B2C and B2B markets have been constantly changing, driven by more demanding customer expectations with the bar being set ever higher by new disrupters. Take the age-old example of Blockbuster, a model and brand that was globally successful and known, quickly disrupted when newcomers set the de facto bar: download a movie anywhere, anytime to a growing number of...

The research, which polled 500 IT and business decision makers across the EU, found that more than half (57%) believe shadow IT practices are happening across at least half of the departments in their organisation, while...
