The cloud pushes Microsoft into data centre hardware

Microsoft has announced its intention to buy StorSimple, a startup seller of enterprise storage systems, for an undisclosed price.

The move reflects Microsoft’s determination to be a cloud leader, and shows that its promise to become a “devices and services company” extends well beyond its forthcoming Surface tablet, and into data centre hardware.

For VMware and Nicira, software trumps hardware

On July 23 VMware, the server virtualisation powerhouse, agreed to acquire software-defined networking pioneer Nicira for $1.26bn; both parties expect the transaction to close in 2012.

Iomart eyes big data as their stock goes up and up

UK cloud service provider Iomart is centring primarily on big data having posted “strong and solid” figures for the last financial year.

Iomart this week announced a two-thirds increase in pre-tax profits, up to £6.9 million, and a one-third increase in revenue, up to £33.5 million, and according to marketing director Phil Worms the figures were in line with company expectations.

Dell continues cloud alignment with Wyse acquisition

Dell has finalised a deal to acquire a leader in thin client cloud solutions Wyse Technology, in a move that is being seen as a clear development of the computing giant’s strategic shift to end-to-end enterprise solutions provider.
