Red Hat: On bridging between the first wave of cloud and next generation platforms

MWC19 For Red Hat, it may sometimes be easier to list what the company doesn't do rather than what it does. The overall umbrella of 'making open source technologies for the enterprise' can range from containers, to cloud, to 5G. But ultimately, as the company has noted at MWC Barcelona this week, it's all developing into a hybrid universe - and it's a space where their customers and partners feel increasingly comfortable.

This is a message of which regular followers of the company - particularly

Why the future of application deployment is not a binary choice

Last year, an interesting headline appeared on Forbes.com: On-premise is dead. Long live on-premise. The author explained that although public cloud is pervasive, on-prem is certainly not dead. Pundits who declared on-prem computing dead and buried several years ago started to backtrack in 2018.

Industry analysts seem to agree. Now it looks...

How a multi-cloud approach works and what it means for your organisation: A guide

A recent IDG survey reported that 89% of businesses have, or plan to, invest in digital initiatives this year. But despite the buzz around digital transformation, implementing it isn’t always smooth sailing – only 44% fully adopted the approach. Introducing new company-wide initiatives can be a daunting prospect for leaders,...

Assessing the Gartner Magic Quadrant for cloud management platforms: How CMPs have ‘come of age’

Transitioning to the cloud is not so much taking a fresh plot of land and building up from there, but more trying to renovate an existing property. For larger organisations with sprawling IT outfits, it can be particularly complicated even once the bulk of the work has been done, with on-premise systems here, public cloud workloads there, and private cloud in between.

What’s more, organisations are realising that one size may not fit...

Hybrid multi-cloud computing investment trends and CIO strategies

As more enterprise CIOs and CTOs embrace hybrid multi-cloud deployment strategies, business technology vendors and cloud service providers must continue to evolve their go-to-market approach - in recognition of the prevailing IT infrastructure investment trends.

Vendor revenue from sales of IT infrastructure products for cloud environments, including public and private cloud, grew 47.2 percent year-over-year in the third quarter of 2018 (3Q18), reaching $16.8 billion, according to the latest worldwide...

AWS looks to redefine hybrid cloud at re:Invent 2018 – plus make big moves in blockchain

Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon Web Services, noted during his keynote at re:Invent today that on a recent business trip, a senior AWS executive found themselves sat next to an exec from an unnamed competitor. They pulled up a presentation deck which – Jassy paraphrasing – noted its product strategy was to ‘look at what AWS launches, and then move as fast as possible to get something vaguely in that area.’

So...

How DevOps and a hybrid model can make the most out of legacy applications

Do you have an application marked with cryptic warning signs and a wealth of cobwebs that is running on legacy hardware hidden away in the back corner of your data centre? If you’re in enterprise IT, chances are high that you do. These old platforms are often considered a bane to IT. More importantly, legacy applications can present a real headache when attempting to uplift the people, processes and tooling needed to embrace a hybrid cloud model.

Enterprises love the hybrid cloud – but it’s all about getting the app management right

Hybrid cloud is the ideal IT model for the majority of organisations – yet comparatively few have it in place today.

That was the key finding from a new report by hyperconverged infrastructure firm Nutanix. The study, the firm’s first Enterprise Cloud Index, polled 2,300 respondents and found that while enterprises plan to up their hybrid cloud usage, less than one in five (18%) said they were on the road to hybrid...
