The importance of APIs in public cloud security: How secure do you think yours are?

The use of the cloud is now mainstream and, despite some concerns, it is generally accepted that the public cloud is not inherently insecure. In fact, in many cases it is more secure than most data centres.

This can be explained when we consider how many opportunities there are for a piece of sensitive information that...

Five Kubernetes role-based access control mistakes to avoid

If you run workloads in Kubernetes, you know how much important data is accessible through the Kubernetes API—from details of deployments to persistent storage configurations to secrets. The Kubernetes community has delivered a number of impactful security features in 2017 and 2018, including Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) for the Kubernetes API.

RBAC is a key security feature that protects your cluster by allowing you to control who can access specific API resources. Because the feature is relatively...

Why building successful SaaS delivery is easier than you think

Software as a service (SaaS) is becoming ubiquitous. It is estimated that enterprises currently use 16 SaaS applications on average, yet one in seven of these businesses also believe that more than 80% of their applications will be SaaS-based by 2020.

This would seem an especially accurate assessment too by enterprises, as the current market for SaaS products and services is worth £54 billion, yet it is expected to

NetApp acquires StackPointCloud for multi-cloud Kubernetes service offering

Another piece of cloud M&A but this time with a Kubernetes feel; hybrid cloud provider NetApp has announced the acquisition of StackPointCloud with the claim of providing the industry's first complete Kubernetes platform for multi-cloud deployments.

As the company's hosting page put it, the proposed hook up is 'the simplest way to deploy a Kubernetes cluster to the clouds'. The NetApp Kubernetes Service is compatible with Amazon Web Services...

Why Kubernetes is helping to make cloud mainstream

There has been a lot of talk in the first half of 2018 around how cloud is being adopted for mission critical applications and becoming mainstream. Right now, the impact of cloud services, cloud technologies and practices for organisations is rapidly accelerating as we enter the next wave of cloud adoption.  To this point, analysts at Forrester predict that the public cloud market will grow by 22 percent in 2018, to $178 billion. This momentum is being driven by companies that recognise the potential...

OpenStack and NVMe-over-Fabrics: Getting higher performance for network-connected SSDs

The evolvement of the NVMe interface protocol is a boon to SSD-based storage arrays. It further powered SSDs (solid state drives) to obtain high performance and reduced latency for accessing data. Benefits further extended by the NVMe over Fabrics network protocol brings NVMe feature retained over the network fabric, while accessing the storage array remotely. Let’s understand how.

While leveraging NVMe protocol with...

The key to ‘elite’ DevOps success in 2018: Culture, cloud infrastructure, and abandoning caution

If you think your organisation has gotten serious about DevOps, the bad news is that a small group of companies are raising the bar higher than ever. But things can change depending on how you implement cloud infrastructure.

That is the primary finding from DORA (DevOps Research and Assessment Team) in its most recent State of DevOps report, which polled almost 1,900 global professionals and was put together primarily...

Puppet State of DevOps 2018: DevOps continues to evolve – but resist temptation to skip steps

There are many paths to success in DevOps, but many more which lead to failure – so it’s important to get the evolution right.

That’s the key finding from Puppet’s recently released 2018 State of DevOps report. The study, which quizzed more than 3,000 global technology professionals, argues there are five key stages for good DevOps practices; having built the foundation, normalise the technology stack,...

Cloud Native Computing Foundation to fully operate Kubernetes – with help of Google Cloud grant

Google Cloud is cutting the umbilical cord further when it comes to Kubernetes. The company is helping fund the move to transfer ownership and management of the technology’s resources to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) with the help of a $9 million grant.

The move will see the CNCF, as well as Kubernetes community members, taking responsibility for all day-to-day project operations. This will include testing...

More emphasis on cloud usage required before DevOps dreams can be realised, firms warned

The good news is that many organisations across Europe are looking to embrace a DevOps-centric approach to their application development and delivery. The bad news is that plenty of hurdles have to be overcome first to achieve this ambition.

That is the key finding from a new study by Claranet, which argues a greater emphasis on cloud usage and automation needs to be seen before DevOps dreams become a reality.

The report, which polled 750 IT professionals across Europe, found almost three in 10 (29%) had...
