Time to lighten up: Don’t get stuck in the IT past!

My Favourite Open Source Software

I have a love-frustration relationship with open-source software. I could never say I hate it, because I don’t. I am however painfully aware of not only how many bad open-projects are out there, but how many almost-great ones there are that come tantalizingly close to making the grade.

We still haven’t reached the point, for example, where you can put a Linux desktop in the hands of the average consumer without good Sysadmin backup. Contrast that with the millions upon millions of windows systems...

While watching TV the other night, I saw several trailers for movies, all of which advertised “in 3D.”  This got me thinking about how 3D and the move toward cloud computing share similar stories.

Lies, Damn Lies, and Predictions

[Rant on] Is it just me, or is anyone else bothered about all the rumors and predictions that seem to dominate the technology news stream? I would hazard a guess that more top articles in the technology space are gossip or guesswork than actual reporting.

Part of this trend, perhaps the most annoying part, is the tendency to take the guesses of other people (predictions,forecasts,…) and report them as fact. Recent examples from the news:

UK users now spend 300 billion hours online. Are you ready?

It's official: The UK is spending most of their time online, over 3 billion hours, with social media taking up the bulk of their attention. Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin, (all driven by cloud computing platforms) are sucking up 800 million hours of your time.

If you are left-brainer who exhibits a natural skepticism towards statistics such as those quoted above, you may be interested to know that Hitwise compiled these stats from anonymous ISP data logs, not user surveys.

What Do You know? Our Survey Results

Earlier this month we harnessed the power of social media by running a short survey on Twitter to find out what our followers think about cloud computing.
