Cloud computing is transforming modern business. Through the cloud, new digital-centric businesses are emerging that are more agile and innovative than anything seen before. Whether a new, ‘upstart’ business like Uber, with its compelling approach to city transport; or an established company breaking into new markets, like General Motors with its investment into Lyft, businesses are pioneering new customer services and business models that are disrupting entire industries...

(c)iStock.com/theevening

By Jason Deck, SVP of Strategy, Logicworks

The age of managed infrastructure is coming to an end. Cloud providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) have spent the last decade developing platforms that eliminate the manual, time-consuming maintenance of hardware, network, and storage, and enabling infrastructure to be controlled via software, i.e. infrastructure...

Who should be in charge of big data analytics: the CIO, CFO, or a specialist?

(c)iStock.com/sorbetto

A new report from big data analytics provider Mu Sigma argues that higher performing companies are four times more likely to use a consistent approach to big data analysis, while consensus is divided on whether the CIO or CFO should be in charge.

The findings come from a survey of 150 large enterprises which turn over at least $500 million (£377.2m) a year, and draw some interesting conclusions on how large firms prioritise their data crunching. 23% of those polled said the CIO...

Forging a viable business technology strategy for today’s global networked economy is a high priority for most forward-thinking CEOs across the globe. Their guidance to CIOs is to create the fusion between existing IT infrastructure and modern cloud services. Moreover, the shift to a hybrid IT model must support the organization’s key commercial expansion objectives.

A disaster recovery plan: What is your IT team keeping from you?

(c)iStock.com/Dimitrios Stefanidis

Your disaster recovery program is like a parachute - you don’t want to find yourself in freefall before you discover it won’t open. But amid hastening development cycles, and cost, resource and time pressures, many CIOs are failing to adequately prioritise DR planning and testing.

While IT teams are running to stand still with day-to-day responsibilities, DR efforts tend to be focused solely on infrastructure, hardware and software, neglecting the people and...

(c)iStock.com/nomadsoul1

It is a question which carries more resonance as technology matures: what is the major role of the CIO today?

The usual responses range from improving business efficiency, to spearheading the organisation’s technological revolution. At the MIT Sloan CIO Conference earlier this month, the answer was simple. “The perfect CIO is enabling the perfectly friction-less business,” argued Steve...

CIOs bemoan increasing IT complexity in their organisations…again

(c)iStock.com/Gazometr

More than three quarters (81%) of CIOs argue the ever-increasing complexity of IT infrastructure is creating a bottleneck for IT support, while a similar number (82%) argue IT support has become a “growing burden” on modern IT departments.

The results appear in a survey from end-to-end technology provider Trustmarque, which polled 200 UK CIOs and senior IT decision makers from large enterprises. More than half of CIOs polled (58%) admit they are struggling to offer a...

Why savvy digital visionaries see beyond the nearby clouds

(c)iStock.com/oztasbc

While the decisive CEOs have a digital transformation agenda, those companies executing plans to re-imagine their business models are in the minority. And yet, the early adopters now using cloud computing are enabled to respond quickly to changing market conditions. In contrast, the laggards are undecided and risk falling further behind.

This is a global phenomena, where the industry and local market leaders are able to enact their transition with limited interference or threats from...
