What’s driving cloud adoption among CIOs?

New research from Host Analytics and conducted by Dimensional Research has found that for four out of five business execs, the cloud is chosen for its value over anything else.

A similar number of employees surveyed said that it’s beneficial for them to use cloud applications.

The research, which covered over 300 CIOs and business executives, again found various benefits to cloud adoption, which may perhaps shift the balance as IT budgets are being prepared for 2013.

When asked for the reasons a cloud...

A CIO’s perspective on priorities for 2013

Journey to the Cloud recently sat down with GreenPages Chief Information and Technology Officer Kevin Hall to talk about the outlook for 2013.

JTC: As CIO at GreenPages what are your major priorities heading into 2013?

KH: As CIO, my major priorities are to continue to rationalize and prioritize within the organization. By rationalize I mean looking at what it is we think the business needs vs. what it is we have, and by prioritize I mean looking at where there are differences between what we have and what we...

What are the current trends in cloud adoption?

A new survey from Navint Partners has revealed that many CIOs of larger organisations are happy with the results of moving to the cloud.

The survey, which predominantly interviewed chief execs of companies with over 5,000 employees, found that despite the general contentment there were still some misgivings about migration, with security predictably near the top of the list.

Nine out of ten respondents said they had gotten all of the predicted savings when their companies adopted cloud technology, with nearly...

How cloud services are an organizational innovation, not a technology "silver bullet"

By Dr Steve Hodgkinson, Research Director, IT, Asia-Pacific, Ovum

Many executives regard technology evangelists as “drive-by shooters” – people who cruise by their offices firing so-called “silver bullet” solutions. Are cloud evangelists in this category? Perhaps. “What Cloud solution is right for us?”

“What functionality will be available in this solution?”

“When will I get my training?” Each of these questions reflects a person grappling with uncertainty at different levels of the organization.  From the initial consideration of changing IT strategy, through the design, implementation, and go live, the project team is constantly working on uncertainty loops as uncertainty cascades down the organization.

The senior decision maker...

Why cloud should be part of your business mobilisation

A survey of mobile enterprise app developers has found that a significant percentage plan to integrate some kind of cloud service into their apps in the near future.

Mobile platform company Appcelerator’s quarterly survey of its developers, carried out by IDC, found that 83% of devs will utilise cloud services and also intend to use a cloud solution for the back end of their apps.

The numbers are roughly in line with a similar...

6 things you should know before your move to the Cloud

Strategies that suggest running company servers from data centres (Cloud Computing) are not a new concept to businesses. But as time has gone on, this strategy has now become a viable alternative to SMEs, providing a number of attractive benefits. As a result, many companies are actively turning to cloud-based strategies rather than merely refreshing server hardware.

But frustratingly - and perhaps inexcusably considering the huge volumes of ink dedicated to the serious considerations of pursuing a cloud...

Is cloud computing really that much cheaper than on-premise?

Before signing any cloud computing contract, or indeed, renewing his on-premise IT agreement, the CIO should sit down with his CFO to clearly identify and understand the total cost of the IT department to the business, and compare his current solution to a cloud-based alternative. And to complete this cost justification process, the CIO must look at each of the following areas:

The IT Crowd

Whilst a company’s employees are its biggest asset, they are also its biggest cost. And if a business employs a...
